Bethlehem Police Officer Sues over being forced to join Alcoholics Anonymous. I Love this GUY!

A Bethlehem police officer who was dismissed following a DUI charge, then ordered to be reinstated, is now suing the city after its expert ruled he is an alcoholic and is unfit to return to the police department.

Richard Hoffman is neither an alcoholic, nor a recovering alcoholic, and has never received a medical diagnosis as such, according to his lawsuit filed in Northampton County Court last month.

Bethlehem, however, is using a forensic psychologist’s opinion to brand him as an alcoholic who cannot perform his duties as a police officer, the suit says.

Hoffman “was, in essence, terminated twice without just cause,” according to the lawsuit.

Since the city regards Hoffman as a recovering alcoholic, which he denies, the city should consider him as a person with a disability covered under the federal Americans with Disabilities Act, the suit says.

Under the statute, Hoffman should have been allowed to complete the recommended treatment before being determined unfit to return to the police department, the lawsuit says.

Hoffman’s attorney, Donald Russo, could not be reached for comment on Wednesday afternoon.

Attorney Susan McDonough is representing Bethlehem in the matter, and filed a notice Wednesday to have the suit moved to federal court. McDonough declined to comment about the suit.

Hoffman was charged with drunken driving after crashing into a parked vehicle and damaging two others in August 2013 in the city. His blood-alcohol content was 0.16, according to authorities.

Hoffman was accepted into a first-time offender’s program and the DUI was erased from his criminal record.

Bethlehem City Council voted unanimously in March 2014 to fire Hoffman, but an arbitrator ruled last year that the city only had cause to discipline him, not fire him.

According to Hoffman’s suit, the arbitrator ruled the city could only discipline him with a 25-day suspension. Hoffman was to be reinstated, but the city had the right to require Hoffman to submit, and successfully complete, a fitness-for-duty evaluation.

Hoffman claims the city never required other officers with DUI charges, who were also suspended 25 days, to receive the same evaluation.

The arbitrators ruling “reflected unlawful bias in the form of an utterly unsubstantiated belief that (Hoffman) was suffering from alcoholism,” the suit says.

As part of Hoffman’s evaluation, Dr. Frank Dattilio submitted a report last May that found Hoffman is an alcoholic who could possibly relapse, and is unfit to return to as a patrolman, according to court papers.

Dattilio made recommendations for Hoffman before he be allowed to return as a full-time police officer:

  • Six months sobriety before being allowed to return to light duty.
  • An additional six months of sobriety before being allowed to return to his patrol unit, with the recommendation of random urine tests.
  • Joining an on-going recovery program, such as Alcoholics Anonymous.
  • Dattilio’s continued evaluation of Hoffman’s complying with the recommendations.

Drunk Driver kills person in Accident says AA didn’t work for him

Driver in fatal Franklin County crash given 7 years

  • By NEIL HARVEY, BH News Service
  • 0
  • For most of his life, alcohol was a part of each day, Ronald Lee Bowker said Monday in Franklin County Circuit Court.

The 52-year-old electrician said he tried Alcoholics Anonymous but claimed it just didn’t work for him. He sought medication that might curb his thirst but said his doctor wouldn’t prescribe it. He told a probation officer his father had always been a heavy drinker and, before that, his grandparents, too.

“I just couldn’t get away from it,” Bowker recalled.

His brand of choice was Icehouse — a lager with a percentage of alcohol by volume that is somewhat higher than most domestic beers — and he told his probation officer he usually drank five or six 24-ounce cans every night.

Bowker was driving drunk on the afternoon of April 24 when his 1999 Chevrolet Silverado crossed the centerline on Burnt Chimney Road and collided head-on with a 2011 Ford Crown Victoria. The driver of the Ford, 58-year-old Trinkle Lee Cook of Moneta, was killed. Read full story here.

Gabrielle Glaser and Monica Richardson give Alcoholics Anonymous a run for its money- a low rating for Healing and minus 1 star rating for safety around alcohol overuse issues and here’s why…

herbestkeptsecretpicbookcover

Once again the article in The Atlantic by journalist Gabrielle Glaser  http://gabrielleglaser.com/articles/ was trending on twitter yesterday, then back on to The ATLANTIC Article http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2015/04/the-irrationality-of-alcoholics-anonymous/386255/written last year about how AA is not the safest or smartest place to go for any kind of REAL healing from Alcohol overuse issues.

For me, a long time ex member who was 13 stepped more then once as a teen and GOT OVER IT…..and just lived with it, realized— thanks to GOD,  my good brain and my sons, that AA was full of S**t …..yea I said it. Full of shit. No science, No research, and lots of religious rhetoric. Many MUSTS and do’s and don’ts and ” better be “of Service”  or else you’ll get drunk….kinda crap….but after 36 years with no booze -I walked away a very disenchanted camper.

Thanks to Gabrielle Glaser who documented the work I did  in 2009 -2010, my last two years in AA ( in Chapter Six of her book  HER BEST KEPT SECRET ) before I left in 2011, about Safety, sexual harassment, sexual predatory crimes and 13 Stepping,  I felt validated and not alone.

In her book Her Best Kept Secret, a New York Times Bestseller, Gabrielle Glaser explained to me and the world how alcohol was once a lovely thing to enjoy in The WHITE HOUSE by our First President, George Washington  &  MRS WASHINGTON, and her many guests.  I learned that most men, women and children were drinking hard cider  necessary until we figured out how to have  clean water.

Americans were neither puritanical or Prohibitionist  from the start…that came later—- along with the non drinking Billionaire Rockefeller, and  the famous AA Creator/founder , —–drunkard, scam artist and womanizer—-Bill Wilson and a few other religious fanatics like Frank Buchman who started the cult The Oxford groups. ( The place Bill Wilson really got sober).

Many decades passed before Courts and judges shoved millions of Americans into a lay person, unsupervised cult like pods of nobody’s for a Drunk driving ticket, a violent offense or whatever floats ones boat today —where EVERYONE says ””OH… I’m an Addict “”””” poor me.  I can’t control myself…blah blah blah.

It does make me wonder where those bad ass pioneering Americans with lots of tough skin, tenacity  and self control have disappeared to?

In her book, HER BEST KEPT SECRET – I also learned  that a Heroin kit could be bought in a Sears & Roebuck Catalog. She then explained  how women’s drinking was on the rise, why… and how were these ladies getting help. Maybe horse therapy in a fancy spa for 50 K was not enough.

Glaser never a problem drinker herself,  began investigating innocently at first, found her way down the same rabbit hole as me, and through Dee Dee Stout, a Harm Reduction Therapist in San Fransisco, who appeared in an episode of “PENN & TELLER Bullshit”  ——- introduced us and…       we met. 🙂 The rest is history.

There are times in life where I have met people, Gabrielle being one of them, that I now feel I could not have gone on with my film and my work without their help and their own driven path to seek out why AA and 12 step controls 95 % of all rehab in America . And why was it infested and controlling our Drug Courts  and the DUI system still to this day?

Her early research brought her into the halls of New York AA Headquarters where an employee made a joke about 13 stepping not realizing that someone might take notice.

Katie Couric heard us because of Gabrielle Glaser and her Book. CBS 48 Hours – episode THE SOBER TRUTH heard and told the story of the Karla Brada Murder because of her.

SO this is my ode to Gabrielle Glaser, in that her fierce voice and criticism was needed, and still needed to tell a very dark true story about what really goes on in those meetings and culture.

Gabrielle being one of the first persons to get the most articles written, criticizes what needed to be done, unlike some of us simple ex stepper bloggers could not get one journalist to hear our voices or write those stories.

The courageous women and men who we both met and interviewed has broken open a dirty little secret that felt it was untouchable, above the law and better then medicine and science. Yes – I am talking about Alcoholics Anonymous. It is not a government agency!

I highly recommend her book for those leaving AA, those thinking about leaving and those who are professionals who have been recommending it to their clients for decades.

For me —-she is my hero—-she is my friend— she is a great writer and without her—- we might…still be on yahoo groups or www.stinkin- thinkin.com  —anti AA groups fighting about if AA could ever be sued or was AA a cult or not- boy how sad that would be.

With dozens of anti AA blogs and ANTI FACEBOOK pages Gabrielle Glaser has managed to amass a long list of legitimate Newspaper, Magazine articles , radio show interviews and the Network news, Television shows to uncover, discover and discard the lie… that

AA is the one and only …and the last house on the block—-

which clearly we know now—-it is not true. Nor is it safe.

Your friend,

Monica

Murder charges against rehab center are a first in California

FINALLY- Thanks to the coverage in the Los Angeles Times .

Murder charges against rehab center are a first in California

Gary Benefield was in rough shape when a driver from the substance abuse treatment company A Better Tomorrow met him at the San Diego airport in 2010.

It was the day before his 53rd birthday. The longtime smoker had recently been hospitalized for pneumonia and was tethered to an oxygen tank, which he had relied on for years. He was seeking treatment for a drinking problem and had signed himself up for a round of detox and rehab.

Sometime that night, he collapsed by his bed at a Murrieta residential facility and died. The house manager, who was supposed to check on him regularly, had fallen asleep. Benefield’s body was found in the morning.

The family sued, reaching an out-of-court settlement.

What came next sent a jolt through California’s large drug and alcohol rehabilitation industry. The state attorney general’s office pursued second-degree murder charges against A Better Tomorrow and four of its employees — the first time in California history that a corporation had been accused of murder, according to the facility’s attorneys.

Kelly Strader, a professor at Southwestern Law School, said the attorney general’s office may have filed the charges as a warning to treatment facilities “that you’d better clean up your act. We’re going to take this very seriously.”

A 2012 report by the California Senate Office of Oversight and Outcomes, which outlined the four deaths at A Better Tomorrow, among others, said that the state had failed to police treatment homes, “with deadly results.”

WHY are you leaving AA? Is it a cult- What is brainwashing- What are key red flags that make a group a toxic group, organization or…yes … a cult?

book_cover_mindcontrolCult

Early on in my work, I was still in AA and I did not think AA was a cult. Haters on Stink-thinkin.com   www.stinkin-thinkin.com were giving me crap for trying to make things safer in AA.” ( 2009 -2010)    ” Leave” — they said.    “You are brainwashed” —-they said.

It took a few years of blogging, two years as a GSR, (General

Service Rep) that I began to see and hear in meetings things I had never noticed before. Finally after reading many books like , Addiction Proof Your Child by Stanton Peele, The workbook from SMART Recovery,  AMY Lee Coys  book FROM DEATH DO I PART,  http://www.amazon.com/Death-Do-Part-Myself-Addiction/dp/069200971X/ref=asap_bc?ie=UTF8 I began filling my head with Non AA rhetoric. Here is a list of books I recommend http://leavingaa.com/recommended-books/

Last July I met a screenwriter who introduced me to Rachel Bernstein   http://www.blogtalkradio.com/saferecovery/2016/02/09/rachel-bernstein-cult-deprogramming-expert–therapist and has been interviewed on my radio show .She is an expert in Cult awareness and deprogramming and with help getting a loved one out of a cult, or an abusive one on one relationship.

All cults have control tactics.

1. AA says ” only we can help you ” —RED FLAG—- there is not such thing as “ONLY WE CAN HELP YOU”

2. AA says- :you must come to meetings forever or you will die, go to jail or go insane ” Really— who are they????? How would they know this—–are they GOD—- are they psychic? NO…they are not.

As time passed and continued my www.blogtalkradio.com/saferecovery I realized that in ripping up the big Book, I saw that AA , and the big book , when it was written has never – I mean Never been vetted, researched or updated.

3. AA says- GOD COULD AND WOULD IF HE WERE SOUGHT….sought about what?

If it were a disease ( which it is not ) why would you being going to a church basement for help for a BRIAN DISEASE, by praying a , talking and asking strangers who are not Doctors for advice. To top it off, its not scientific, or medical advice. Its quasi cult arm chair psychobabble.

DISGUSTING AA members harasses blogger Massive while recovery from Serious Disease and surgery.

plumeria image

I have deleted most comments, but they are in the trash bin and can be resurrected at any time.

I -as many of you know have  been dealing with serious CANCER since September. I have just had another surgery. Although I usually don’t talk about my health here. But your comments are so telling of who and what you trolls and current AA members are I have decided to address it.

SO FUCK OFF with your lack of compassion not only for me but Karla’s parents whose child was murdered, Karen’s 4 year old son was raped by an AA man in an AA meeting and Brittany was a victim of Drug Sex Slavery IN Kentucky.  ALL highlighted in my film .

I do not give  a shit what you think.

Don’t  you ever write here again. I will go to the police with cyber bullying when I am well enough to drive my car. If its crosses State borders they it becomes an FBI case. SO —-

For those who are new here…putting a blog into moderation just means you can write something but it wont appear till I approve it.

God Bless all of you who are my friends and have supported me.

The rest of you assholes—- I know your kind from my 36 years in your stupid AA what ever the f**k you wanna call it.

LAWSUITS , Alcoholics Anonymous, Sexual assault, Rape, Sexual Harassment, Your Rights, Non Profits and Stopping a 1930’s Institution from Getting away with Murder.

truth justice

We want to begin a new dialogue about how to expose the coercion of US citizens who get DUI’s, and told they must go to AA meetings, which is a violation of their First Amendment Rights. We want to  stop AA from being in our Courts and educate people about other free options like SMART RECOVERY, Moderation, SOS, Women for Sobriety and HAMS Harm Reduction and the Use of Naltrexone etc.

We want AA out of The FAA and extorting Pilots to go to AA meetings,  to AA rehabs to the tune of 40K a month because they have money, and forcing them to spend thousands of dollars to go to an AA Psychiatrist. Yes an AA member who is a psychiatrist and playing the AA game and making alot of money doing it.

We want to stop The Board of Nursing from sending Nurses to AA for 5 years.

We want AA members, or those coerced there to know that when they are sexually harassed in an AA meeting, that they have rights and they can do something about it.

There have been similar organizations that have gotten away with sexual assault crimes and preying on children for hundreds of years, that have since been attacked, sued and forced to change . These organizations were once untouchable. The Catholic Church and The Boy Scouts have helped many, yet still they needed to address sex offenders and deviants from using their organization for easy pickings. It was their Insurance carriers , not their caring about the protection of children that forced them to do this.

With the growth of the internet and a few powerful blogs like Orange Papers and Stinkin- Thinkin, things began to change in regards to AA and secrecy.

In 2008 a General Service Board member , Paul C.  wrote a 7 page letter http://stinkin-thinkin.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/ATTACHMENT_TO_TOPIC_002-PREDATORS.doc.pdf  to the General Service Board of Alcoholics Anonymous. They made him wait one year to read it to them. Then something happened that shocked not only Paul, but a couple of Board members … one that I interviewed for The 13th Step. They were shocked when the board asked the AA member team of paid employees to go to the AA US fellowship and ask them how they feel about such things.

They told the Board ” That’s not our job! ” The men that I knew who were inside for that meeting told me that after my 8 page letter arrived in October of 2009 they, the AA General Service Board voted to do nothing…. One man was in AA for 30 + years. These are really good men who were sickened by what they saw going in in NY AA Main Headquarters…these men who were on the board decided to leave AA .

All across America, including Los Angeles, Ohio, Fort Collins, Louisville , Kentucky, Bellingham ,Washington, I visited AA meetings with women who were harmed and we saw a pattern. Meetings once filled to capacity over with 300 now had 30. Meetings once filled with 110 pp, on a Friday  night , now had 10.

With one click into Google  a person can type, IS AA DANGEROUS. or Sexual Predators in AA.

Gabrielle Glasers New York Times Bestseller, HER BEST KEPT SECRET http://gabrielleglaser.com/

and Lance Dodes book The SOBER TRUTH    http://www.lancedodes.com/ also came out in the summer of 2012. Gabrielle’s piece in THE ATLANTIC had millions of reads and thousands of comments. http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2015/04/the-irrationality-of-alcoholics-anonymous/386255/

Most journalists I spoke to at first had no idea that AA was not run by a trained social worker or therapist. I was shocked by their idea that it was. I knew what AA was and what it wasn’t.

Then CBS 48 Hours aired. Boy did the shit storm happen on CBS 48 Hours FACEBOOK Page- Some AA members calling Maureen Maher all kinds of vicious names and comments that even shocked some of us. They went crazy calling Karla Brada parents names saying they were looking for Big bucks with their Law Suit against AA, which we know is not true. EVEN Marianne Williamson attacked Gabrielle Glaser on her FACEBOOK page when Gabrielle was on MSNBC. She was far from “spiritual” in her remarks.

If you are leaving AA, NA, or if you have left and have been harmed in any way, I would like to make a suggestion. Write your story of how and what happened in the shortest form  you can do. Think about anyone who is a professional in your town, be it a Therapist, Police Officer, Judge, Doctor, Lawyer, Educator, parole Officer. Tell your community how you were harmed.

#2. If what was done to you was a crime. Think about — are you willing to take them to court, finally go to the Police? Do you need help with support to do that? contact us at makeaasafer@gmail.com

#3 Were you “just” sexually harassed and are you willing to speak out about it?

#4 Were you financially ripped off by an AA member or your AA sponsor ?

Maybe you just want to make a youtube video about it.  Like Jason Bartley has done.

There are many who silently Hate AA. There are many who claim AA saved their lives. We here know what AA really is…and what it isn’t.

2016 – Get ready as we are ready to kick some butt when it comes to extortion, The FAA,  the Board of Nursing, DUI and coercion in our courts.

The Latest Advocacy News Headlines on Addiction, Treatment and Recovery Policy, WHITE HOUSE seeks 1.2 Billion for Addiction Treatment.

There is a huge story trending now with the opiate addiction problem. I have pasted the link, but there are many other stories out  there. Please link the ones you like. I am pretty upset by this , yet I hope some good comes of it and not another WAR on DRUGS ….yikes….make Pot Legal everywhere, drop the drinking age back to 18 and they wont be stealing your opiate pills – then off to heroin. They will smoke some pot and have a beer. God forbid we Americans learn how to drink moderately.  🙂

White House officials announced Tuesday that they will seek nearly $1.2 billion in new federal funding over the next two years to address the growing problem of heroin and prescription opioid use, an epidemic that has become an increasingly important policy priority among the nation’s politicians.

The centerpiece of the proposal is $1 billion in mandatory funding over two years to expand access to treatment for prescription drug abuse and heroin use, $920 million of which would go to the states. Another $500 million, some of which is a continuation of existing funds, would support work by the departments of Health and Human Services and Justice to expand not just treatment but access to the overdose-reversal drug naloxone, and support targeted enforcement activities.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-politics/wp/2016/02/02/white-house-seeks-nearly-1-2-billion-for-drug-prevention-treatment-overdose-response/

Here is my twist on it all.

There are many people who use pain medication properly and and do not abuse it. There are many sides to this problem. The problem with opiate addiction is coupled with the failure of the religious AA or 12 step dominated rehabs that fail miserably…and have for decades. Yes some people abuse these drugs, but saying Opiate Addiction is taking over the country and killing so many is absurd. I along with many have a real disease called CANCER. SOME 600,000 people will die from Cancer in the USA this year alone and over 2 Million will die throughout the world in one year. WHERE IS THE PUBLIC outcry about that? No — they would prefer to march with pink ribbons—–the breast cancer movement is a joke and almost as bad as the way AA has hijacked addiction treatment. The pink ribbon ladies have hijacked Breast Cancer Research and prefer to sit in Support groups and run 5 K walks/runs. I don’t think I will be joining them.

Yes some Doctors give too many pills, I too have received a bottle filled with Vicodin for a broken ankle when all I needed was 12 pills….not 30.   ( I don’t  have an issue or a problem with pills ) so I don’t get the abuse of it ….but… the rest of the world should not have to be penalized. Just listen to his wording– the senator speaking to the  President “The Addiction is going to rise up and consume this country?” http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/opioid-epidemic_us_56b26f25e4b08069c7a5ecb6 HMMMM sounds like Nixon, Regan, Bush and yes Harry Anslinger, our first Drug Czar who began our failed War On Drugs.

We need to provide real treatment.  That would be Doctors who are not pushing AA, Mental Health Professionals who are not pushing AA, a 1930’s religious self help group that is also not safe. I had a Father who was addicted , then stopped them for 17 years, and began again and lost everything he had and died in 2008. I know the heart ache of losing someone I loved to abuse of a substance. If I knew about non 12 step help, he may still be alive.

All the two hatter AA members who are making a killer on crap Sober Living, which is like a flophouse, crappy rehabs that charge $1,000 a day to be driven to a free AA meeting where violent offenders are waiting to prey, this is not Mental Health HELP. This is not   Medicine or Science. So when they are handing out the 1.2 Billion Dollars, I hope this money goes to the other 6 free options, that currently exist. I hope this money goes to free clinics we need where SMART Recovery, Harm Reduction, SOS, LifeRING, Women for Sobriety and Moderation, and The SINCLAIR Method are used with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Motivational Interviewing and can be used along with the psych meds that may be needed. I hope this money will also be used for Research. But I hear it’s only for treatment. Well that’s the other part of the problem. The treatment in America is 95 % Alcoholics Anonymous. A lay person, highly religious support group from 1935, that is unregulated, unsafe and has untrained, anonymous persons in charge. Yes there are leaders in Alcoholics Anonymous. They are on their General Service Board and they work in the NY office and their are delegates that work for free all over the Country.

I hope this money is used for new types of treatment that we know is working much better with young persons like Science and Kindness used at The Center for Motivation and Change, Practical Recovery, St Judes Retreats, The Baldwin Institute, Alternatives in Los Angeles and The Center for Optimal Living… hence Harm Reduction.

AA is infested in rehab to the tune of 30 Billion dollars already. Why does this industry need 1 billion dollars. Ill tell you why. Because those who are already running this Industry, who make big bucks DO NOT ….give BACK ….to help those with addiction disorders, but rather force their AA on everyone from the kid on the block who is shooting heroin, to the MOM hooked on Xanex, to …..the FAA, Pilots, The Board of Nursing, Nurses and Doctors and Lawyers who seek help from just abusing alcohol. The rehab INDUSTRY BUSINESS is already pushing this antiquated thing called  “Alcoholics Anonymous”.

Let’s move on and get 2015 science, medicine and therapy’s to help not only those with opiate addictions, but anyone caught up and/ or suffering with a Drug & Alcohol over use issue.

NY AA dismissed ( Not Local Los Angeles AA) as defendant in Brada wrongful death lawsuit

January 13, 2016 6:48 p.m.
Parents of a Saugus woman murdered in 2011 sued Alcoholics Anonymous when they learned she met her killer through AA.Hector and Jaroslava Mendez of Sylmar said they were seeking justice for their murdered daughter, Karla Brada, when they filed a wrongful death lawsuit. But on Tuesday they learned the list of defendants named in the lawsuit no longer includes the organization they believe could have prevented her death.Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Rita J. Miller dismissed the Mendez lawsuit Tuesday against the General Service Board of Alcoholics Anonymous Inc. and Alcoholics Anonymous World Services, Inc. on Tuesday.A San Fernando Superior Court jury found Eric Earle guilty in 2014 of murdering Brada by willfully and deliberately smothering her to death between the night of Aug. 31, 2011, and the morning of Sept. 1, 2011, inside the couple’s Saugus condominium. He was sentenced in 2014 to 26 years in prison. For Brada’s parents, AA was to blame for failing to prevent the murder because Brada met Earle at AA meetings. And, while their lawsuit continues against other defendants named — Earle himself and Brada’s AA sponsors — the two most prominent defendants representing AA headquarters were officially dismissed from the case.

The news was bittersweet for the lawyer who has struggled to hold AA accountable for the circumstances he believed led to Brada’s death.

“We’re disappointed that they let the New York AA out of the suit,” Valencia attorney John W. Noland said Wednesday.

“California law isn’t supportive of civil rights,” he said. “If this case had been heard in a different state, They (AA) might not have been released.”

So California is not supportive of Civil RIghts? WOW—- we need media and lawyers, activists and people who care about Civil Rights in California.

We know AA in NY knew that Violent offenders have been not only court ordered by judges  and the plea deals , but AA in NY has Literature teaching members how to go into prisons and bring them out and into meetings for 50 + years. Long before Drug Court even began.

They are still suing the Sponsors and Eric ….

Blog away !

FYI- Its only NY AA that was dismissed. Not Local AA in LA.
