A Different Path to Fighting Addiction
Finally The New York Times is printing pieces that are non 12 step help…Thanks to Gabrielle Glaser and the women at The Center of Motivation and Change the world is now going to learn new things available to parents and their children.
by Gabrielle Glaser
When their son had to take a medical leave from college, Jack and Wendy knew they — and he — needed help with his binge drinking. Their son’s psychiatrist, along with a few friends, suggested Alcoholics Anonymous. He had a disease, and in order to stay alive, he’d have to attend A.A. meetings and abstain from alcohol for the rest of his life, they said.
But the couple, a Manhattan reporter and editor who asked to be identified only by their first names to protect their son’s privacy, resisted that approach. Instead, they turned to a group of psychologists who specialize in treating substance use and other compulsive behaviors at the Center for Motivation and Change.
The center, known as the C.M.C., operates out of two floors of a 19th-century building on 30th Street and Fifth Avenue. It is part of a growing wing of addiction treatment that rejects the A.A. model of strict abstinence as the sole form of recovery for alcohol and drug users.

Is AA like a wind up phone circa 1930’s…
and Smart Recovery is like an IPHONE.
Why in America are we so stuck back then, when it comes to addiction, alcoholic overuse and dependency? At first I thought AA just grew as a grassroots organization. I thought that because the readings at AA meetings and the folklore that is perpetuated in meetings, makes one think that. Our TV shows like “MOM”
and FILMS like “FLIGHT”
with Denzel Washington promotes it all flagrantly like its sweet cookies and milk support group that is run by professionals and secular, which we all know is not true! …
so hear is the thread you have requested….:)
Hi. Have you been coerced or bullied into AA? Are you a Doctor
or a pilot? AA was formulated when cigarettes were promoted as being good for us as we see here in this ad. Well, is AA still good for the masses? Never updated, never researched or never vetted? For 75 years…
I have just come back from interviewing a Pilot and a Doctor. I was so shocked I had a hard time watching the footage when I got home. I got up from my desk, went downstairs and told my husband it was too depressing…I could not handle it …how sad he is…. Thank God my editor is more detached! LOL Thanks … Barry RUBINOW.
The coercion within the FAA and pilots is so fucked up that it broke my heart. This pilot /doctor was so sad that I have no words for what I felt from him. We could not film him in the light and we will have to pitch his voice for fear that he will be so retaliated upon and loss his license.
Things are very bad when the FAA is sending you to an AA psychiatrist who is called a something …blah blah medical Sponsor with some silly other word preceding it. They charge $1,500. for one session. There are only 2 of them in Northern Cali. They force the pilots to go to an expensive $40,000 bullshit rehab called HAZELTON !!!!!!! filled with stepper shit….OMFG!
I want you to know this….You are not alone. There is an attorney who can help you. Please contact me for now and we will begin to see how to handle all the emails. email@example.com
I know it’s small in numbers compared to some other self help groups but…
The other night I decided to go to a new SMART meeting that I saw was in Culver City.
I think Smart has tripled in size over the past four years in terms of face to face meetings in Los Angeles.
There were seven men and me there. It was a great meeting with a really great leader. I learned the 4 point system. It was useful for way more then not drinking!
There was the usual stepper being dragged there by an unhappy stepper looking for saner solutions. It was a young crowd. NIce to see.
But the leader told me that the day after Gabrielle and I were on Katie Couric
“Seven women came to his meeting …the very next day.” Seven!
In Smart terms that’s alot, because often a Smart meeting might have 8-12 people in all. If Seven women came to one west LA meeting the next day …how many came all over the country. Those women will never have to go to AA!!!! That is progress!
Anyway, I think Smart Recovery, Hams Network, SOS and Moderation along with The Sinclair Method are great options that will see huge growth these next 2-3 years. Between Claudia Christian’s Film, Mikeblamedenial and mine The 13Th STEP The Film, will put a dent in the AA recovery racket.
WOW. A mile to be sure.
Thanks for all your support. 🙂 Any suggestions for shows or guests you would like to hear on my show just drop me a line. Exposing the dangers of AA was my first priority and then moved to also interviewing the leaders of the other options available to help with alcohol and drug overuse, both free and for profit.
Books are a great way to educate ourselves so if you’ve found a great new author that I have not interviewed Im interested in that as well!
We will be launching my KICK Starter campaign around August 6th! STAY TUNED!!!
you can always download and listen for free on itunes on any device.
One Day at a Time. (a seriously overused slogan from the gutter of Bill WIlson’s basement.)
When I was younger and new in AA I lived one moment at a time. Even back then I hated the sayings “one day at a time“, “Think, Think, Think”, ” First Things First“.
I hated their stupid slogans. I quit for life back then without the help of AA. I quit drinking on my own 2 weeks before I went to any AA meeting. I thought chips and 30-60-90 standing up etc even in 1975 was a bunch of nonsense. But, sometimes life throws us a curve. Things happen. Pets die, friends move away, health issues arise, and new friends from the blogs commit suicide as with Ryan.
Good things happen too. We leave AA and find freedom. We develop new hobbies. We realize AA is filled with laughable belief systems from 1930. I know I hammer this fact about the 1930’s but honestly….its really true. Laden with traces of prohibition and the temperance movement from then, we plan to change the worlds views on Addiction and Alcohol over use.One issues at a time. One state at a time.
AA can keeps it’s tentacles in the 1% true alcoholic. I have no interest in this demographic. I want to help young people to use moderation or sane abstinence based programs THEY CHOOSE and more practical non religious paths to healthy living around alcohol and drugs.
We want to change the laws.
We want to educate everywhere that AA doesn’t work for most and that it is dangerous.
I am no longer alone in my journey. I have met many of you on www.Stinkin-thinkin.com , OP and RFR as well as my other blog www.stop13stepinaa.wordpress.com.
We want the world to know there are other options like;
Smart Recovery, SOS- Secular Organizations for Sobriety, Ken Anderson’s Hams Harm Reduction, www.drinklinkmoderation.com, Moderation Management for Moderation programs that work, Amy Lee Coy’s way FROM DEATH DO I PART, Hank Hayes’s way YOU’VE BEEN LIED TO…, Rational Recovery, WFS, or just reading a good book and blogging with other ex steppers.
Each and everyone of you have helped me deprogram and find my way somewhere between the remnants of the AA cult think and a real normal world where most people live. 🙂
I apologize to my sons whenever needed for the bullshit spewed to them …lies I said to them unknowingly about the alcohol and alcoholism rhetoric engrained in me. What a joke it is in today’s entertainment culture.
But now, I know. I know the truth and thank God …so do my wonderful sons.
I pray every parent finds my blog before they do what I did to my first born. It’s criminal the lies AA sober parents say to their kids.
I will spend my life changing all of this and some how make it sane to get help.
Take a look at this ad from the 1930’s. That’s right. You are not mistaken. They are promoting to smoke cigarettes and they are saying, indead smoking luckies is good for your health. Funny, AA was pushing that AA was good for alcoholics as well.
If you went to your OBGYN in 1936 I think you would be a bit surprised how he treated you. Again if you went to your Dentist in 1936 and had your teeth worked on you might run from the office knowing the “TOOLS” he would use today. Now let’s talk about Heart Disease. Now this would prove deadly. If you went to your Cardioligist in 1936 and he treated you …you would be dead. There were no tools like we have today when it comes to heart disease, heart transplants and we even can use a part from a pig for a valve.
So before you, your spouse, your mom, your uncle head for a 12 step meeting or even consider going to a “Treatment Center” like Betty Ford or What ever famous rehab is on Dr Phil’s go to list…DO the research.
Trust me. They have not done the research. None. Zip. Zilch. in 75 Years. No research of any kind.
And more more thing. SO NOT SEND YOUR KIDS TO 12 Step. There are no safety policies in AA or NA and our Judges are sentencing 3rd level Sex Offenders to these meetings.
Join Massive on Blogtalk radio today to discuss your thoughts, ideas, complaints, solutions and experience about what is going on in AMERICA where they charge 25k to stop drinking or using drugs. Amy Weinhouse might still be alive if Tom Horvath from Practical Recovery could have talked to her.
