COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) – Nearly a year after a prescription drug case in Columbus and Valdosta, Ga. led to the arrests and sentencing of seven individuals, a final eighth physician has been sentenced for his participation in the crimes at the Relief Institute and the Valdosta Wellness Center.

“Dr. Vinod Shah, 69, of Salisbury, NC previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy to dispense controlled substances outside the usual course of medical practice and a legitimate medical purpose and was sentenced to prison on April 3,2019 by the Honorable Hugh Lawson. Dr. Shah will serve three years supervised release. There is no parole in the federal system,” according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

In June 2018, William Bacon, MD and Donatus O. Mbanefo, MD were each sentenced for conspiracy to dispense controlled substances outside the usual course of medical practice and a legitimate medical purpose at clinic locations in Columbus and Valdosta, Ga.

Bacon received 72 months imprisonment and a $95,000 forfeiture, while Mbanefo was sentenced to 96 months in prison.
